OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is one of the most important metrics in manufacturing—but many teams struggle to calculate it accurately.

This guide breaks down exactly how to calculate OEE step-by-step.

What is OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) measures how effectively equipment is being used by combining:

  • Availability
  • Performance
  • Quality

The formula is:

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

Step 1: Calculate Availability

Availability measures how much planned production time is actually used.

Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time

Example:

  • Planned Production Time = 8 hours
  • Downtime = 2 hours
  • Run Time = 6 hours

Availability = 6 / 8 = 75%

Step 2: Calculate Performance

Performance measures how fast equipment runs compared to its ideal speed.

Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Units) / Run Time

Example:

  • Ideal Cycle Time = 1 minute per unit
  • Total Units = 300
  • Run Time = 6 hours (360 minutes)

Performance = (1 × 300) / 360 = 83%

Step 3: Calculate Quality

Quality measures how many good units are produced.

Quality = Good Units / Total Units

Example:

  • Total Units = 300
  • Defective Units = 30
  • Good Units = 270

Quality = 270 / 300 = 90%

Final OEE Calculation

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

OEE = 75% × 83% × 90%

OEE = 56%

What This Means

An OEE score of 56% indicates significant opportunity for improvement across downtime, speed, and quality.

Most facilities operate between 60%–75%, while world-class performance is 85% or higher.

How to Improve OEE

To improve OEE, manufacturers need:

  • Accurate downtime tracking
  • Preventive maintenance programs
  • Real-time visibility into performance
  • Standardized work order processes
