OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is one of the most important metrics in manufacturing—but many teams struggle to calculate it accurately.

This guide breaks down exactly how to calculate OEE step-by-step.

What is OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) measures how effectively equipment is being used by combining:

  • Availability
  • Performance
  • Quality

The formula is:

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

Step 1: Calculate Availability

Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time

Example:
Planned Production Time = 8 hours
Downtime = 2 hours
Run Time = 6 hours

Availability = 75%

Step 2: Calculate Performance

Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Units) / Run Time

Example:
Ideal Cycle Time = 1 minute
Total Units = 300
Run Time = 360 minutes

Performance = 83%

Step 3: Calculate Quality

Quality = Good Units / Total Units

Example:
Total Units = 300
Good Units = 270

Quality = 90%

Final OEE Calculation

OEE = 75% × 83% × 90% = 56%
